Scalp Psoriasis:Causes,Symptoms and Treatment

Psoriasis is a skin disorder which can appear anywhere on the body including scalp.When psoriasis appears on scalp then it is called as scalp psoriasis.People affected with psoriasis can observe 1 or more reddish patches on scalp with dandruff like flaking.In some cases it can affect entire scalp and can appear on the forehead,back of the neck or behind the ears.

Symptoms of Scalp Psoriasis:
In mild cases one slight, fine scaling can be observed.

While in severe case:

Scalp Psoriasis directly doesn’t cause hair loss,but scratching due to severe itching causes hair loss.Once underlying skin is treated hair grows back to normal.

Causes of Scalp Psoriasis:
Psoriasis is related to genetic defects where an immune system grows too many skin cells on various parts of the body including scalp.Scalp Psoriasis causes red, swollen patches on the head with itching and flaking as well.Psoriasis is not contagious.

Scalp Psoriasis Treatment:
Though Scalp Psoriasis is not life threatening,but it is surely disturbing and embarrassing.There are many treatment options available.

Topicals:
This is the easiest,safest and effective way to treat scalp psoriasis.These are creams,lotions,ointments,gels and shampoos that can directly be applied to the affected skin.These products include salicylic acid,tar preparations,anthralin,antimicrobials and calcium modulationg drugs and topical steriods.

Injections:
If you have mild scalp psoriasis,dermatologist may consider injecting steroids directly into affected areas.

Photo therapy and Laser therapy:
These therapy will be performed in doctor’s office.If Scalp Psoriasis has affected large areas of your head,then your dermatologist may consider photo therapy.Ultraviolet light (UVL) can treat large areas of skin with few side effects.

If Scalp Psoriasis has affected only small area of head,then it is advisable to go for laser therapy as the areas of skin that can be treated at one time are small.These lasers produce UVL in wavelengths similar to narrow-band UVB.

Oral Medications:
If you have severe scalp psoriasis,dermatologist may prescribe oral medication.These medicines needs to be prescribed only by doctors after careful study as these may cause side effects on liver, kidney, and bone marrow.

These Oral medications include:

  • Corticosteroids
  • Methotrexate
  • Cyclosporine
  • Vitamin A and Vitamin D derivative
